i was watching my new Matt Helm Lounge DVD set and this is the drawing that came about.

Rosebowl Parking Lot

today's painting was in the Rosebowl Parking lot, section K to be exact. a typical hazy, SoCal morning.

Film Sketch

this is a study from the Ingmar Berman film the Seventh seal which was photographed by Gunnar Fischer. one of the best and most classicly photographed films ever in my opinion. absolutely text book in it's compositions and cutting.

quick sunday sketch

another quick laptop painting, this time in color. the screen still is pretty washed out when i'm working. i have a simple sunscreen that i'll try next time. that should cut the glare a little more. incidentally, the other car in the driveway is under a cover, it's not a giant paper bag sitting there.

no rain today

i painted this today at Art Center with my class. i've been experimenting more with textural brushes and i like what i'm starting to get. this is all Photoshop for those who have been asking. it was an absolutely gorgeous day.

a step by step

here's a breakdown of a digital painting i did in photoshop. this is for a book being written by Martin Mckenna. he previously published a book called "Digital Fantasy Painting Workshop". the new book will be similar but focusing on horror art.

the Mysterious Madam Ming

another drawing for the sketchbook. i thought she came out well, good flow, nice color. it was fun only using 4 colors for her. more designed that way.

a rainy first day

i teach a digital landscape painting class at Art Center but it was rainy today, so we had to stay inside and practice our speed paintings. we stayed with the same theme that was outside and this was my last one of the day.

Downtown Pasadena

it was really cold when i painted this although you wouldn't know it to look at the painting. direct observation of a night time scene was really great. a lot of people have asked what i'm using. it's a small iBook with a Graphire Wacom and all painted in Photoshop.

todays laptop sketch

this one isn't from life, it's made up. i was wanting to experiment with a more textural brush in photoshop. i imagine this is some wierd little store somewhere in downtown LA that sells more than groceries. i think there's body parts involved.....

Finding the FLOW

one of the hardest things about drawing is finding the flow or gesture of the pose. it has nothing to do with the individual pieces and everything to do with how rhythms transfer through the body. it usually takes me a few sketches before i decipher the correct flow. the goal of drawing for me is to emphasis that while playing down the "bumps and lumps" that may be there, but don't contribute to the idea.

GALAXY drawing

here's the drawing of the girl by herself.

GALAXY 2000

you know those great old car ads from the fities and sixties? i thought i would paraody one but show the future that they envisioned. an illustrator named Radebaugh is most identified with that look. he painted most of the really cool Bohn Aluminum ads that depicted the fantastic machines that could be made with Aluminum. it's been long enough that one can really see the style of those eras and the illustration from that time is truly a unique American art form. will our time be as identifiable 30 years from now?

Modern Medusa

this one is a modern take on an old myth. i can see her going to a lot clubs in LA, can't you?

Red Series

2 recent illos with a similar pallette. i really like limited color schemes. there's something about them.

My Minion

i love doodling little creatures, they're so much fun because you can come up with any shape as long as it's interesting.

Digital painting from life

i'm going to do more paintings from life on a laptop this year. here's the first one. all in photoshop, aprox. an hour long. this was the warm up to see if the battery last long enough and see if it was comfortable to do.

Step by Step of the Angry Alien

here's a break down of the process involved in the creation of the alien sketch. it's all done in photoshop.

Todays Sketch

another quick doodle i did today. this one was inked with a ballpoint.

Blue Hair

another quick sketch i did over the Christmas break.

Next Cover

this is the drawing for the next "Dick Harden Mystery".

Angry Alien!

i did this sketch a few months ago and really liked the way it came out.

Glamour Con LA

so, finally i can share the pics form GLamourCon LA. there's always lots of interesting people there and Mr. Hefner even got a chuckle out of the new tshirt design. here's a picture of Linda O'Neil and myself (acting goofy) with her shirt design i did for Tiki Island Wear.

New BLoG!

Hi everyone. For the new year I've decided to start this blog as a better way of updating everyone as to the goings on of the endeavor I call Broadview Graphics . This will be far easier to update and post the latest sketches and news. I'm working on the sketchbook for San Diego this year and it's coming along nicely.
