Union Station

here's a sketch of Union Station downtown. directly behind me is the section where they filmed part of Bladerunner. Captain Bryant's scene to be exact.

Sketch from life using Painter

so, i had to run home and try out a sketch from life using this small version of painter that came with my wacom. i must say, i like the pared down version, it does just enough. i believe it's called Painter Essentials 2. Painter does one thing really well and that's mixing the pixels to give a true wet into wet feel.

Inside on Sunday

it was a little rainy this morning so i painted another interior. this was a little more "scrathy" than the others but i thought it just held together.

i thought this arrangement looked interesting last night so i fired up the MAC and painted this sketch. i could almost call the piece, "the phone" because it seems to be staged around it. who's going to call, what do they want?

Sunday Morn

here's a sketch from this morning. it's fairly quick...about an hour and unseasonable warm for this time of year. i was inspired by mike hernandez's gouache studies of street scenes. he makes the ordinary seem beautiful.

Cal Tech

today we painted at Cal Tech and i dashed off 2 quick sketches. a little more textural than some of the previous posts but i liked the color and atmosphere.

well, she is smoking...and a red head, i hope she's hot, she thinks she's hot!

Eaton Canyon

here's today's painting. a lot of you have asked for a step by step breakdown of the process so i saved those out as i worked. i also included a shot of my set up. 2 camping stools, one for me and one for the computer. i begin with a simple breakdown of value and color. i try and keep the compostion down to the fewest values possible that will still evoke the general mood in front of me. then i elaborate on the differnent hues and add a little form to the objects in the scene. finally i refine the shapes and values till i can't see anything more that needs "fixing".
