Emilio Ruiz del Rio

i first heard of him when i was reading an article on Ray Harryhausen and Ray said he used a Spanish matte painter who worked on cut out aluminum. at first i thought it was a typo. cut out aluminum? much later i found his site and sure enough, he painted in camera mattes on site with aluminum. sadly he passed away this year. here's a few pictures of his work and a documentary has been made on him that i can't wait to come out on DVD.

whoa, it took me a second to figure out that first photo, then I read what you had to say. That is most impressive. Leads back to a discussion I was recently having with technology doing away with technique. Nice find, thanks for sharing.

I watched Conan the Barbarian the other day knowing that I'd see some of Emilio's matte paintings/miniatures (so many movies credited him for miniatures but they were actually matte paintings on foreground aluminum miniatures) and they still hold up. There are shots were you know it's a matte painting because it CAN'T POSSIBLY BE REAL...OR IS IT? Seriously I was like the RCA dog staring at the screen. Amazing work.

Thanks for posting.
